YORUBA GIRL IN NEW YORK

A LOVE LETTER AND PERSONAL MESSAGE TO THE AFRICAN DIASPORA BY ADEDARE OLUFERE

2ND - 5TH MAY 2024

THE AFRICA CENTRE, LONDON

Press Release: For Immediate Release

Kanaiza Gallery proudly presents the inaugural UK solo exhibition of AdéDáre Olúfèrè: "Yoruba Girl in New York." Hailing from Ibadan, Nigeria, AdéDáre is a creator of fine art and music. His works of art, both in painting and music represent his love for Africa and mission to preserve her heritage.

Yoruba Girl in New York is a love letter and personal message from AdéDáre to the African Diaspora. Drawing inspiration from Sting's renowned track, 'English Man in New York,' AdéDáre reimagines the narrative through his brush, capturing the essence of Yoruba and Ifa culture amidst the vibrant backdrop of New York City. Intertwining traditional Ifa culture with the contemporary Western aesthetic. Through his masterful use of female figures, AdéDáre metaphorically uses female figures as the mothers of humanity who create and represent both men and women.

Accompanying this iconic visual series is AdéDáre's spirited music single, blending elements of highlife and afro-jazz, inviting audiences to embrace and preserve their original heritage culture as global citizens of the world. He hopes that we stop to dance and that our ori (head) and ẹsẹ (feet) lead us to good people.

AdéDáre's solo exhibition, "Yoruba Girl in New York," offers a multi-sensory journey, from palm wine tasting to intimate Afro-fusion dinners and reflection sessions. Each experience is meticulously crafted to immerse visitors in the essence of AdéDáre's artistry. Additionally, bespoke cocktails inspired by the female muses featured in the series will be available at Le Maquis Lounge Bar adding depth to the full exhibition experience, inviting us to engage with AdéDáre's art and its layers of influence on several levels.

ADEDARE OLUFERE

Hailing from the historic city of Ibadan, Nigeria, in the heart of West Africa, Dáre Olúfèrè, affectionately known as AdéDáre, is a passionate advocate for African culture. A graduate of Music from the University of Ibadan, AdéDáre's artistic pursuits in both painting and music are deeply rooted in his love for Africa and its fading heritage. Delving into the sacred and rich traditions of his Yoruba roots, AdéDáre infuses contemporary societal themes with the timeless values of his culture.

AdéDáre's choice of indigo hues pays homage to its historical significance within the black community, while his narrative is anchored in Ifa, the ancient Yoruba system of divination and philosophy, complemented by other African motifs, all serving to amplify his message.
