March in solidarity, 2024

Sharon Gekonge

Reflects the emotional landscape shaped by constant movement and isolation, using penguins as a symbolic representation of resilience and solidarity. Much like these creatures, who thrive in collective strength but endure harsh environments, those who migrate—whether by choice or necessity—navigate the tension between community and isolation. The penguins in March in Solidarity all face one direction, united in their journey, except for one that turns away from the group. This figure represents the individual who feels out of sync with the collective experience—whether due to personal doubt, a different perspective, or a deeper sense of isolation. While the group moves forward, this lone figure highlights the complex reality of migration: the shared struggle, yet the deeply personal and sometimes isolating nature of the journey.
